O2 preps mobile telly

Mobile telly is still a cottage industry here in Blighty. But O2 is pushing to change all that with a new made-for-mobile show heading to their punters’ phones tomorrow.

‘Cell’ (see what they’ve done there?) has been made with Endemol, the chaps who brought us good ol’ Big Brother, amongst other TV delights.

The plan is to release twenty episodes, each clocking in at an on-the-go friendly two minutes each. They’ll cost 50p or £3.50 for the lot.

Cell’s premise sounds like a disconcerting concoction of Prison Break and bleak Korean snuff flick Old Boy. It traces the parallel lives of a man who finds himself in a high security prison, not knowing how or why he got there.

We’re hoping the Old Boy comparisons end there. It’s not the kind of thing you want to be watching on the bus of a morning.

O2 punters just need to text Cell to 2020 tomorrow to get involved. Personally, we’d like to get more of this mobile telly type action. Weekly goal clips just aren’t doing it for us.

PC World doling out free laptops

In spite of our pricey gadget obsession, we love a freebie here at T3 Towers. Which is why PC World’s offer of a gratis lappie has caught our eye.

You can lay your hands on an Advent PC when you sign on the dotted line for an 18-month 3 Mobile Broadband subscription. The deal will set you back £35 a month, and will tick along at 2.8Mbps, letting you snaffle 3GB of data on the move.

That works out at 100 hours surfing, 2000 emails, 200 tunes and a ton of two minute vids. And all without needing to get yourself into a WiFi hotspot first. Gawd bless 3G.

Free laptops include the Advent 9912, replete with 1GB memory, 80GB hard drive and Vista Home Premium.

Okay, it’s no MacBook Air, but if the low end stylings don’t tickle your fancy, you can eschew your free PC for a £350 discount on a slew of laptops.

That includes a Sony Vaio AR51J down to a stonking £499. Considering that packs in a Blu-Ray player, we reckon it’s a complete steal.

Elsewhere, you can snag lappies from Tosh and Packard Bell. For all the deals, head over to the PC World website.

Eazo desktops offer ultra-luxe style at merely super-luxe prices

Filed under:

For those of you too cheap to pony up for that $700,000 diamond-encrusted Jupiter desktop we saw yesterday, China’s Eazo is willing to throw down the luxe for less than a tenth of the price — which still means the X70, pictured here, stil costs $45,500, but hey. The distinctive machine features a 3GHz Q9550 Core 2 Quad, two NVIDIA 8800GTX graphics cards, 4GB of RAM, light-up liquid cooling, a 10,000rpm 150GB drive backed up by a 7,200rpm 500GB drive, 7.1-channel sound, and Vista Ultimate, all wrapped up in an easy-access case with pneumatic door hinges. Of course, you can custom-configure systems well past the $70K mark (and down to just $9K), but if you’re not happy with this stock config, you might want to try yoga or something, Mr. Power Hungry. Check a bunch more shots in the gallery.

Hands-on with the Nikon D60 DSLR

Filed under:

It seems like big boys Nikon and Canon DSLRs have been slugging it out since, well, before the “D” was even a thought. This year, it’s a fight over the entry-level end of the DSLR market with the Nikon’s D60 facing off against Canon’s EOS Rebel XSi. On paper at least, Nikon’s offering is little changed from from the D40x: 10.2-megapixel CCD, 3-fps shooting, sensor dust reduction, and of course, Eye-Fi enhancements. Of course, the real tale is in the images, so we’ll hold judgement until we see the results of the EXPEED image processing concept.

Sony’s game division finally turns a profit

Filed under:

After bleeding red for months, Sony’s games division finally turned a profit last quarter. Sony sold 4.9 million PS3s last quarter after slashing console prices, boosting game titles, and cutting production costs internally. Of course, we’re sure Wii shortages aren’t hurting Sony’s bottom line either. Sony did lower its annual sales goal of PS3s from 11 million to 9.5 million (citing a slow start) while increasing PSP projections to 13 million from 10 million as originally expected. Sony’s fiscal year ends in March. Overall, Sony’s profits rose 25% for the quarter. Welcome back to black Sony, it’s been a long time coming.
