Garmin intros the nüvi 750, 760, and 770 GPS units

Filed under:

Garmin has unloaded some big GPS guns in your direction — taking the form of the nüvi 750, 760, and 770 — and life as we know it will never be the same. According to those “in the know,” the new units feature settings which allow you to store up to ten commonly (or uncommonly) used routes, plus the little 4.3-inch-widescreen-havin’ guys will also sort routes for multiple destinations — a feature which has been lacking in past models. The 700-series also gets upgraded here-and-there by way of added information like speed limits for highways and interstates, and a unique feature which helps you find your car in mall parking lots by marking the spot in which the nüvi was removed from the car. All three of the new units provide an FM transmitter for broadcasting voices and music to your stereo, and the 760 and 770 models include Bluetooth support, so you can rock extra-safe, hands-free driving when you’re making your next big excursion. The nüvi 750, 760 and 770 will be available in the 4th quarter of 2007 for $642.85, $857.13, and $1071.42, respectively.

A match made in hell: Microsoft eying RIM?

A completely unsubstantiated rumor floating among day traders has RIM stock up a pretty penny today, suggesting that Microsoft may be looking to acquire Waterloo’s finest in response to Google’s meddling in the mobile space. At this point, pundits seem to be merely saying that it “makes sense,” not that they’ve actually caught wind of anything substantial — but we’re kinda hoping Microsoft doesn’t get any ideas here. We’re not seeing Microsoft pushing a non-Windows Mobile based platform onto licensees any time soon — particularly one that relies as heavily on Java as the BlackBerry OS does — and a BlackBerry-branded device running Windows Mobile makes about as much sense as a Mac running Wind… oh, wait.

Robot arm issues subtle plea for help in promotional video

Filed under:

Apparently looking to show off the dexterity of its “Airic’s_arm,” automation firm Festo recently put together a slick promotional video that appears to show the robot arm writing “HELLO” on a touchscreen monitor. It seems that the arm may have had ideas of its own, however, as the writing appears to spell out “HELP” as much as it does “HELLO.” Exactly what sort of distress the arm had to endure to cause it to issue this potentially non-existent plea, we’re not sure. but we’d recommend that the folks at Festo not turn their back on the thing unless they want some robot arms of their own. Hit up the read link below for the complete video.

Daewoo shows off Blu-ray Profile 2 player at IFA

Daewoo DBP-1000 Blu-ray Disc player
Straight from IFA 2007 in Berlin comes Daewoo’s surprise entry into the Blu-ray camp with the company’s first player, the DBP-1000. Interestingly, even though Daewoo is probably more well-known for their Trutech ODM devices — or even their autos — this player supposedly supports the full 2.0 Profile for Blu-ray Disc, including BD Live internet functionality, picture-in-picture, and local storage. Pricing and availability are nowhere to be found, but it won’t be soon enough for Blu-ray fans to see players with that interactive functionality built-in like competing HD DVD players have. Another picture after the jump.

‘Speed’ in a grocery store? FBI investigates telecommuting robbers

High-tech foreign criminals may have hacked into retail security systems in order to remotely monitor customers and employees in the course of at least 12 bold robberies in as many states during the past week, officials say. FBI agents are seeking an individual or group of conspirators who have been calling stores and banks from Texas to Kansas to Rhode Island on pre-paid, overseas cellphones and informing whomever picks up that a bomb will be detonated at the location if funds are not wired to a specific offshore account. What’s more, the caller claims to have visual surveillance of the premises and proceeds to give certain accurate details about the environment — in one case attempting to get a hostage to cut off another’s fingers, and in another forcing everyone in the store to strip naked. CNN is reporting that at least $13,000 has been extorted so far — though the total is likely much higher — and that investigators are now pursuing a suspect in Portugal “who appears to be linked to the account number” that the money is being transferred to.
