Google Talk VoIP phone in development… again?

One can’t help but wonder if the recent decisions regarding the FCC’s 700MHz frequency auction aren’t having an effect on Google’s desire to bring a WiFi phone to market as quickly as possible. What better way to use the new “open” frequency than to put Google Talk on a device and get it into the hands of customers about to get “choices” for what they’re using to ride the celestial-wavelengths? According to sources, a Taiwanese ODM called Wistron NeWeb has entered “design-in development” for phones with Google Talk compatibility. Of course, we’ve heard similar rumors before, but the company already makes Skype phones, so moving the technology to Google’s implementation of VoIP would be easy as pie — and who doesn’t like pie?

ATI graphics to support DisplayPort 1.1 in early 2008

Egads, the industry’s move to DisplayPort is hotting up with AMD announcing ATI Radeon graphics processors supporting DisplayPort 1.1 in the “early 2008 timeframe.” Just in time to support Samsung’s new 30-inch panel scheduled to see production in Q2 2008. In fact, AMD just completed successful interoperability testing of their presumably “next-generation graphics processor” toting a native DisplayPort 1.1 transmitter. Taking a deeper look then into those analyst notes issued last week, we can expect the new interface to appear in ATI’s Shanghai-class, R700 FireGL graphics cards. Now all we need is an official announcement from some of the PC boys are we’re good to go. Yeah, we’re looking at you Dell.

Pure intros environmentally-friendly EVOKE-1S DAB radio

Filed under:

Looking to one-up the well received EVOKE-1XT is the EVOKE-1S, the latest DAB radio to fly out of Pure Digital‘s doors. This device supports the optional ChargePAK, features an OLED display, and is compatible with textSCAN and Intellitext as well. Furthermore, the 3.5-millimeter auxiliary jack enables your favorite DAP to get some play time through this too, and the built-in FM tuner is always around for backup. Most notable, however, is the uber-green approach Pure took when designing this unit, as it arrives in packaging made from a minimum of 70-percent recycled material, consumes just one-watt of power in standby, is finished with water-based varnish, and includes documentation printed on 100-percent recycled paper. The EVOKE-1S will be available in real maple or cherry veneer, and will only run you £99.99 ($202) this September.

Teq AV/IT’s WID110 makes any display wireless

Forget forking out for one of those proprietary wireless displays, as Teq AV/IT’s WID110 enables any ole display or projector to receive video signals sans wires so long as it understands VGA. The wireless gateway / receiver “enables multiple computers to stream video to a screen without any cables,” and allows presenters to carry around a few small pieces of hardware rather than a dedicated monitor. Notably, the unit plays nice with 802.11b/g, outputs at 1,280 x 768, supports Windows XP / Vista / CE and OS X, is password protected, and even handles video clips in MPEG formats. Reportedly, you can look forward to a 250-foot range outside and a 150-foot range whilst indoors, and while there’s no pricetag readily available, we don’t envision such a luxury coming without a noticeable premium.
