Apple sued for alleged violation of accessibility laws at retail store

Filed under:

It looks like Apple’s facing a lawsuit of a different sort than the ones it’s used to, with two California women now suing the company over alleged violations of accessibility laws at its flagship retail store in San Francisco. According to AppleInsider, the pair say the store poses a whole range of difficulties for people in wheelchairs, with products out of reach and the Genius Bar in particular all but inaccessible. They also say the store’s presentation theater has no wheelchair accessible seating areas or passageways, making it impossible for them to attend instructional workshops. While the two women are seeking a jury trial and compensation for “emotional and physical losses,” they apparently aren’t giving up on the store entirely, saying they “intend to return and patronize this Store, once legally required access has been provided.”

[Thanks, Mark]

The Nokia iPhone commercial

As Nokia said yesterday, “If there is something good in the world then we copy with pride.” Alright then, fine with us — now let’s take it to the next level. We don’t know what you’re doing to further the big-name iPhone knockoff revolution, but we did our part and pitched in by making our pals at Nokia a commercial for that hot new non-device of theirs — free of charge. Sure, maybe it seems a little familiar, but gratis is a hell of a lot less than what TBWA \ Chiat \ Day charges. Commercial and downloads after the break.

Philips launches Aurea LCDs, with next-gen Ambilight

Right on schedule, Philips has unveiled its new wave of Ambilight-powered television: Aurea. Sure, it’s not as sexy when you call it by its 42PFL9900D model number, but the 42-inch 1080p LCD is sure to turn heads either way. Under the hood Philips has 100Hz refresh, “invisible speakers” and even a trio of HDMI inputs. The new Ambilight Spectra tech uses 126 LEDs and shoots light through the “Active Frame” for a more extensive Ambilight experience. The displays will be available next month, but there’s still no word on price. Peep the gallery below for some stylized shots of the display by fashion photog Vincent Peters.

Sierra Wireless intros AirCard 880U / 881U USB modems

Hot on the heels of the AirCard 595U, Sierra Wireless is expanding its HSUPA offerings with a new duo of USB modems. The AirCard 880U and 881U both connect to your Windows or OS X-based computer via USB, sport the company’s TRU design features, and offer up a “theoretical maximum [upload] speed of 2Mbps,” while downlink speeds tout a “theoretical maximum of 7.2Mbps.” Additionally, in areas where HSUPA networks aren’t available, both modems are “fully compatible with HSDPA, UMTS, EDGE, GPRS, and GSM network technologies on all frequencies currently used worldwide.” The 880U is said to be “optimized for Europe and Asia, while the AirCard 881U is optimized for North America,” and both units are slated to ship out next month.
