Numonyx (Intel and STMicroelectronics) already shipping phase-change memory samples

Filed under:

We hear this new phase-change memory stuff is awful special, which is why we’re hoping to get our hands on some now that Numonyx (the “pospective” company founded last year by Intel and STMicroelectronics to make the stuff), is apparently shipping “Alverstone”-codenamed prototypes. Of course, with progress comes hype: according to Ed Doller, Numonyx’s “prospective” CTO, “This is the most significant non-volatile memory advancement in 40 years.” Show us the memory!

The H2GO RC racer with fuel-cell power plant — a panacea?

Filed under:

The achilles heel of RC racers has always been the battery. A few minutes of play after hours of charging is no way to waste the sacred years of youth — we have video games for that. Now this race fans, the H2GO racer fueled by hydrogen cartridges from Horizon Fuel Cell. Produced by Corgi International, the clean running H2GO is designed by the slightly mad, Red White Barron of design — Luigi Colani — and ships with a water refueling station, solar panel, and remote control. Details are otherwise frustratingly scarce. Though we can assume that the car features water-activated HydroPak Mini prototype cells and will easily cost a couple of Benjamins by the time it goes production. Unfortunately, that would be sometime in late 2008 or 2009 based on Horizon Fuel Cell’s earlier estimates of commercial fuel cell availability. Oh, the agony.

Bonjour SCX-4500W: Apple’s favorite Samsung multi-function printer goes wireless

Filed under:

Samsung’s sexy little multi-function, monochrome laser printer, copier, and color scanner just hit the FCC with a tiny surprise: 802.11b/g WiFi and 10/100 Ethernet. That’s right, Sammy’s Swan (aka, SCX-4500) now comes in a SCX-4500W version supporting Windows, Mac, and Linux machines; LPR, IPP/HTTP, DHCP, and BOOTP protocols; and WEP or WPA Personal WiFi encryption. As a bonus, it also supports Bonjour to make network detection for your Mac (and suitably installed PCs) a snap. Not really a surprise since the SCX-4500W made its first US appearance exclusively in Apple’s retail stores. No word on when it will pop for retail, but we expect it to snag a $300 or so price tag. FCC glamor shot after the break.

New Star Wars Lego: Video and exclusive pics

With the packaging on the latest Star Wars Lego range reading Ages 8-12, you can’t help but ponder the possibility of them underestimating their demographic.

Really, the combination of two such iconic childhood staples offers the nostalgic capacity to unlock that inner child and get to building with second Death Star-like haste.

Which is why were so excited to get a sneak peak of (as well as a good play with) the newest arrivals at the Toy Fair expo last week. We’re happy to report that our findings were impressive… most impressive.

The young Padawans arriving on the shelves this August will include the AT-TE Walker first featured in Attack of the Clones and the Clone Wars cartoons. There’s also the V19 Torrent Starfighter and the Republic Attack Gunship to enable you to wipe out those pesky separatist Battle ‘Droids with the minimum of fuss.

Available to buy now, however, is the pick of the bunch from the upcoming Force Unleashed video game series – which picks up the storyline slack between Episodes III and IV: Darth Vader’s Rogue Shadow fighter comes with a miniature helmet-less Darth figure and also his new as-yet-unnamed apprentice who hunts down the remaining Jedi with gusto.
