Shocker: wireless keylogging is quite easy

Well as usual, with the benefits of wireless technology come detriments in the form of security holes, and now a pair of researchers from Dreamlab have proven just how easy it is to sniff out the transmissions broadcast by RF keyboards. According to their whitepaper, “27MHz keyboard insecurities,” Max Moser and Philipp Schrödel claim that keystroke signals sent from Microsoft’s Wireless Optical Desktop 1000 and 2000 are encrypted with a simple one-byte offset cipher — meaning that there are only 256 possible keys, with less than 50 sample strokes needed for decryption. And in case you thought you were safe with a non-Microsoft board, think again: Team Dreamlab is busy hacking Logitech’s “Secure Connect” protocol as we speak. [Warning: PDF link]

DIY’er creates homegrown mini mech

Filed under:

We’ve seen mechs of all shapes and sizes, but typically, they either aren’t for sale or are priced right out of most budgets. Thankfully, Andres Bella has created a “mini mech” that can be replicated by anyone with a few extra dollars, a decent understanding of robotics and a bunch of unused vacation time. The creature was built using a Basic Stam II microcontroller, a couple of high gear motors / pneumatic cylinders, a power supply, pressure gauge and a bunch of metal (among other things). We won’t pretend to know exactly how he went about constructing this thing, but we’d certainly love to have one to take the load off our own feet (and part the seas of holiday shoppers).

Wibrain’s B1 UMPC unboxed, still mystifying from all angles

Filed under:

We’ve already seen Wibrain’s inscrutably-designed B1 showcased on video, but there’s just nothing that sparks up conversation like a gallery full of unboxing photos. Thankfully, The Boy Genius has done the honors and tediously photographed the entire unpacking process for your enjoyment, and yes, we’re still not sure if we appreciate or abhor the design. Enough jabber, click on to the read link and take a gander for yourself — she’s a real eye-turner, for better or worse.
