Busted Rock Band axe? Here’s a free game for your trouble

Filed under:

Just days ago, we heard that the Rock Band team would be replacing faulty axes with haste, but alas, they haven’t been able to come through as promised to all customers. Reportedly, a “late shipment from its manufacturer” has caused some gamers to pace around frantically while suffering through an “unacceptably long delay,” but rather than sitting idly, EA will be offering up a free game to those who are forced to wait. Certain customers have already received emails notifying them of their reward for patience, but interestingly, there’s no mention of what game will be handed out. ‘Course, it also states that “details will follow shortly,” so here’s to hoping it’s a title worth playing (or eBaying, at the very least).

Nintendo’s Wii Fit unboxed

Our bosom buddies over at Engadget Japanese got ahold of Nintendo’s new Wii Fit and ran through the unboxing ritual for our sake — they’re all too busy burning the carbs to bother with such nonsense otherwise. Nothing much to see in the box, but we’re sure you’d rather get started on some yoga than play with a bunch of doodads anyways.

Nokia envisions fingerprint-reading cellphone displays

Filed under:

Cellphones with built-in fingerprint scanners aren’t exactly revolutionary, but a recent patent application filed by Nokia could foreshadow mobile displays that recognize and react to biometric inputs. More specifically, the technology would see a touch-sensitive user interface that could allow / deny access or morph depending on what user swiped their finger. Moreover, a mysterious “visual display cursor” is also referenced, which would seemingly allow the device to bring important applications / lists / etc. to the screen’s forefront depending on the preferences saved for each fingerprint. As always, it’s a mystery as to when something like this will actually go mainstream, but we certainly dig the sound of it — even when written in totally incomprehensible patent app lingo.

Steve Jobs to deliver opening keynote at MacWorld 2008

In a shocking turn of events, IDG World Expo officially announced today that Steve Jobs will in fact headline next year’s MacWorld San Francisco conference, with his opening keynote address set to go down at 9:00AM sharp on January 15th. Exactly what that keynote will entail remains a mystery, of course, although we’ve certainly heard plenty of rumblings on the matter. Whatever it is El-Jobso has in store, you can be sure we’ll have by-the-minute coverage of it, so mark your calenders and watch this space, or not.

[Thanks, Mark]

Tivo rolls out Picasa, Photobucket integration

Tivo owners with Picasa or Photobucket accounts just got another way to view their photos on their TVs — everyone’s favorite DVR company announced deals with both services today that will allow users to access their photos from any Tivo device. Photos will be pulled down at the highest resolution your Tivo supports, so Series3 and Tivo HD owners will get HD-res images displayed, and what’s more, users can also access friends’ photo albums. The feature should be rolling out starting today — between this and that Rhapsody partnership, it seems like Tivo is starting to get serious about branching into the still-dormant media streamer / extender market.
