Time names iPhone “Invention Of the Year”

Filed under:

Apple’s “love it,” “hate it” or “hack it to pieces” iPhone is Time’s “Invention Of the Year,” following up last year’s YouTube win. Nothing more to say about this thing that hasn’t been said a million times, but don’t worry, Time is careful to retread it all just in case you’ve been in a coma since January.

Verizon’s BlackBerry Pearl 8130 now available for pre-order

Filed under:

We’ve had plenty of face time with this little guy already, but Verizon Wireless has finally fessed up to a precise release date and price point for its EV-DO BlackBerry Pearl 8130. The phone is available for pre-order at $200 with a 2 year contract and an automatic $100 online discount, and will ship out on November 8th. Let’s see if that’s good enough to beat Sprint’s version to market.

Zune 2 in the wild, Wal-Mart style

Say what you will about Wal-Mart (you hippie, you) but they’ve really been coming through with the broken street dates of late. This time it’s Microsoft’s new and improved Zune “2” lineup making an appearance, almost two whole weeks before the supposed November 13th ship date. These were spotted in a Saint Louis Wal-Mart, and are reportedly for sale, though only the original-flavor 30GB model has the pricetag. Anybody else got a Wal-Mart friendly enough to share the goods?

Wi-LAN claims WiFi and DSL patent infringment, sues everybody

Sadly, we can’t say the story of “random company decides it has patents worth milking, sues world + dog” is a new one, but it’s still fun for a quick laugh. This time ’round it’s Ottawa-based Wi-LAN with a bone to pick with the likes of Apple, Belkin, Best Buy, Dell, HP, Intel, Netgear, Sony and pretty much any other major electronics manufacturer or retailer — 22 all told. Wi-LAN claims that those companies are swiping its technology related to WiFi and power consumption in DSL products, so anybody making or selling a router, modem or laptop is a target. Apparently Fujitsu struck a licensing agreement with Wi-LAN in July. Like most patent troll suits, this one’s going down in Marshall, Texas.

Project LifeLight set to illuminate African homes — no electricity required

Filed under:

First it was radios, now lights. The Freeplay Foundation has undertaken a new project — dubbed LifeLight — which aims to provide just a few hours of lighting each night to the 500 million or so sub-Saharan Africans without appropriate access to electricity. The idea is to place a wind-up (or foot-pump driven we presume) base station into the home which charges a collection of detachable lights. Similar to the technology behind the 150,000 wind-up Lifeline radios (pictured) they’ve already distributed. Freeplay hopes to replace expensive and unhealthy kerosene or battery powered lamps currently in use with their low-cost, environmentally safe alternative — local women will be trained to sell and repair the devices. Prototypes are being readied with tests to begin in Kenya in the “next few months.”
