Make no mistake, Everex can build ’em some kind of ugly. Still, they have learned to spin their gear as green, not underpowered, which counts for something. The TC2502 gPC (that’s “g” as in “green,” not crap) is out cluttering Wal-Mart shelves with a low, low $199 price tag. Inside, you’ll find a 1.5GHz VIA C7 CPU sitting daintily on a Mini-ITX motherboard. A Linux OS, 512MB of memory and an 80GB of disk are tossed in just for kicks. So why that huge-ass case? That’s the best part. Research indicates that Wal-Mart shoppers equate the size of the system to its capability. As such, Everex swaddled all that nothingness in a 2-foot by 2-foot monument to plastic. Now go ahead, Greenpeace, we beg you, rip it apart and let us know just how much non-recyclable polymer and dangerous PVC and BFR this pup really contains.

While the new Buffalo DVD burner can never compare to the wall-rattling speed of Samsung‘s Super-WriteMaster (which blazes through your pirated software at 20x when hitting DVD±R discs), the 19x offering from the Japanese peripheral manufacturer ain’t too shabby. There’s not too much to get excited about beyond the burner’s adequately fast speeds, save for the ATAPI and SATA configurations and availability of white or black faceplates — which are sure to be a sweet match to even the most fashionable of desktops. The drive will be available in mid-November and will run you ¥6300 (about $55) for the SATA model, and ¥6900 (or $61) for the ATAPI configuration. [Warning: read link is in Japanese]

The folks over at CNET aren’t wasting a moment getting to know Panasonic’s latest Blu-ray player, so why should you? Reviewers started off by praising Panny for getting a Profile 1.1-compliant player out before the actual deadline, and minor gripes about the DMP-BD10A (namely, the remote and the fold-down door) have been addressed satisfactorily. Additionally, it was noted that audiophiles would find lots to love courtesy of its ability to output DTS-HD Master Audio / Dolby TrueHD soundtracks in bitstream format, and sticklers for image quality are likely to be equally impressed. Put simply, this unit “performed excellently by properly deinterlacing 1080i signals to 1080p without artifacts or jaggies,” and it managed to measure up quite well with other highly-regarded BD players when playing back films. All in all, the BD30 was awarded a 7.4 out of 10 rating, and we’re pretty certain that adding an Ethernet jack and built-in decoders for high-resolution audio formats would’ve made this thing even more attractive.

You may recall Libya’s initial pledge to purchase 1.2 million low-cost lappies from OLPC, but some 12 months later, it looks like the nation’s education ministry has given its business (for realz this time) to Intel and Microsoft. Reportedly, the country placed an order in August for 150,000 Classmate PCs, and deployment has just recently begun. Intel spokeswoman Agnes Kwan noted that Intel and Microsoft were “not subsidizing the price of the laptops,” but she failed to mention exactly how much the Libyan education ministry was forking out for the machines. Furthermore, Kwan stated that Nigeria was also on board and should be placing an order of its own soon, but considering how sketchy these commitments have been in the past, we wouldn’t hold our breath just yet.
