Garmin challenges TomTom with $3.3 billion bid for Tele Atlas

Filed under:

Man, it must feel mighty fantastic to be Tele Atlas right about now. Not even a month after TomTom finalized a whopping $2.5 billion offer to take the map maker over, Garmin — which currently relies on NAVTEQ maps — has come out swinging with a staggering $3.3 billion bid of its own. As expected, Tele Atlas is now taking a good hard look at both offers and examining its options, and some analysts are even suggesting that a bidding war could take the figure even higher. ‘Course, such a conjecture is easy to make when TomTom has already proclaimed that it would reply in some way “in the near future.” Bust out the blank checks — this one could get ugly (or very pretty, if you’re a Tele Atlas shareholder).

Samsung gets official with three new SyncMaster monitors

Filed under:

While they already look to have made their way to a number of retailers unannounced, Samsung has just now gotten official with the three latest additions to its SyncMaster line, including two 19-inch models and a 22-incher. On the 19-inch front, the 920BM opts for the old school aspect ratio and a 1280 x 1024 resolution, while the 920WM goes 16:10 with a 1440 x 900 resolution. Sure to attract more interest than either of those, however, is the 22-inch 2220WM model, which will give you a 1680 x 1050 resolution and a decent 1,000:1 contrast ratio. All three also boast a 5 ms response time, and some built-in speakers, which at the very least don’t seem to be too obtrusive. If that’ll do, you can grab any one of ’em now for between $220 and $350.

Roberts Radio Robi DABs up your iPod

Filed under:

Look, if you absolutely, positively must get some DAB into your iPod lifestyle, then you’ll probably be somewhat interested in the Robi — a new tuner from Roberts Radio which lets you pipe in smooth digital broadcasts via your regular old player. There really aren’t a lot of plusses here; for £49.99 (or $100) you get a DAB tuner that also does double duty as a remote. Does this second function justify the cost? Probably not, considering all those extra cables and unsightly middleman, but if you’ve got a bad desire for digital radio, you could do a lot worse (you could also consider players with built in DAB functionality). Available now, it would appear.

Google getting cozy with Verizon and Sprint for the Gphone?

Filed under:

The Gphone rumors have been heating up lately, and things seems like they’re about to come to a boil. The Wall Street Journal, not generally known for wild rumor-mongering, is reporting that Google is in “advanced talks” with Verizon and Sprint and has made “significant progress” with T-Mobile, with an announcement of some kind due within two weeks. The news sent Google stock past $700 today, although it’s still not clear if Google is simply developing its own software or going all out and doing an entire handset. Either way, it looks like Google’s getting ready to make a move sometime soon, and with the amount of chatter we’re hearing, it’s going to be a big one.

Jobo’s latest Giga Vu: the Pro Extreme

Jobo’s Giga Vu line has always been primarily targeted at photographers who need portable storage and viewing capabilites, but the devices’ Linux foundations and open SDK have made them pretty hacker-friendly as well. Both camps should be happy about Jobo’s latest entry, the Giga Vu Pro Extreme, which adds support for Jobo’s photoGPS unit, bumps capacities up to 160GB, and comes with an SD/SDHC adapter. Apart from that, it’s basically the same Giga Vu as always: 3.7-inch VGA screen, support for over 100 RAW formats, loupe viewing modes with dust detection, TV-out, PictBridge support, and a dash of PMP features, including support for MPEG 4 video. No word on when these will actually be hitting shelves, but you’d better start saving your pennies: Jobo’s listing the 80GB Pro Extreme at $599, the 120GB at $749, and the $160GB model at a whopping $899.
