Police fatally taser gasoline-soaked suspect

Filed under:

As we’ve reported before, tasers might not be as safe as their makers like to claim. Juan Flores Lopez, a Texas man who had doused himself in gasoline, became the latest unfortunate taser-related casuality when police used the stun device (which sometimes emit sparks) during his arrest. “We don’t know what ignited the fire,” perplexed officers admitted. The case is currently being investigated by the Texas Rangers.

Musical Tesla coil plays Super Mario Brothers theme

Filed under:

After the robotic giraffe, a Mac running XP and this guy’s second Zune tattoo, you probably thought there was nothing left to see, but then along comes a giant Tesla coil that creates a “resonant frequency” and plays the SMB music to a crowd of onlookers. No word on if it knows “Signs” or not. Check the video after the break.

Congress calls for robot caucus

Filed under:

Apparently adrenalized by Bill Gates’s rousing Scientific American manifesto A Robot in Every Home, Congressmen Mike Doyle and Zach Wamp have called for the first robot caucus to convene in Washington. Spurred into action by the idea that “the robotics industry is developing in much the same way as the computer business did 30 years ago”, Doyle hopes to promote robot awareness, work on robot policy, and educate Congress on issues in robotics to ensure “that our nation remains globally competitive”. Wamp added that he looks forward to the caucus’s first order of business: identifying which congresspeople are, in fact, robots themselves.

Fujitsu’s P7230: now in pink with Core Duo ULV

Filed under:

Fujitsu looks to be trying to get as much out of its P7230 ultraportable as possible, with the company now offering a bit more choice in the processor department, along with a new limited edition pink model for those tired of the standard un-colorful fare. Somewhat curiously, the most the pink model gets is a Core Duo U1400 Ultra Low Voltage processor, while the standard black model now tops out at a Core Duo U2500 ULV. Otherwise, the two boast mostly similar specs, including a 10.6-inch display, Intel 945GMS Express chipset, 1GB of RAM, and a max 80GB hard drive (though not more than 60GB on the pink model). Each also have the same $1,599 starting price, with the top-end U2500-based model running just over $2,000.
