New York Public Library gets first Espresso Book Machine

Filed under:

While it looks like it’s still a ways from setting up shop next to more traditional vending machines, those in New York CIty can now get their instant-book fix from the very first (non-beta) Espresso Book Machine, which has found a home in the New York Public Library’s Science, Industry and Business Library. For the time being, most of the books on offer appear to be ones in the public domain, including over 200,000 titles from the Open Content Alliance database, which visitors to the library can print off books free of charge, the end result of which is supposedly “indistinguishable from the factory-made title.” From the looks of it, Espresso manufacturer On Demand Books doesn’t seem to be having any trouble getting takers for the machine, with the New Orleans Public Library, the University of Alberta, the Northshire Bookstore in Manchester, Vermont, and the Open Content Alliance in San Francisco each already in line to get one this fall.

Acer / ECS looking to pick up Shuttle?

Filed under:

While this one may seem a tad out of left field, rumors are swirling that either Acer or Elitegroup Computer Systems could be fixing to pick Shuttle up if it decides to sell itself. According to an admittedly brief writeup at DigiTimes, ECS reportedly has a “good relationship with Shuttle,” and is being named “by market sources as one of two potential buyers” with Acer being the second. Interestingly, “sources” at ECS purportedly insinuated that there “was no need to acquire Shuttle” in order to meet its strategic goals, and while spokespeople for Acer were tightlipped, it wouldn’t be too far-fetched for the partnership-happy firm to ink yet another deal.

iPhone data plans to surface before launch day

Another day, another rash of iPhone rumblings for the fanatics. As we sit just over a week away from the launch, a piece in USA Today gave way to the fact that Apple’s forthcoming handset is to thank for “2,000 extra sales people” joining AT&T’s force — some of which will actually remain long-term to assist with the barrage of new customers. Additionally, it was (unsurprisingly) noted that larger markets would get a greater quantity of phones, but those who can’t snag one immediately can place “mail orders” that should be shipped out “in three to five days.” Most interesting, however, is the conversation surrounding the elusive data plans; initially, it was insinuated that customers would be forced to wait until the 29th in order to learn about the potential option(s), but a followup over at iLounge allowed AT&T spokesman Mark Siegel to clear things up. He stated that folks would know the details “before the 29th,” and while we’ve no idea what kind of price premium you may face, he also claimed that it wouldn’t “be anything exotic.” Of course, you’ll hand over just about anything it asks in order to take one home, right?

Windows Live Local SUV spotted in Sacramento

Leave it to Redmond to ante up with a big, gas guzzling SUV for its “street-side view” purposes. Recently caught cruising in Northern California, this hulking Chevy makes Immersive Media‘s Google fleet (family mini-van and college grad’s first car) look pretty tame. Now if only they could snap more pics of Ballmer pulling this face. Take another look after the break.

[Thanks, Gabriel H]

Kawada HRP-3 Promet workerbot gets upgraded to Mk-II

Filed under:

It’s been a pretty long time since we’ve heard from this guy, but the HRP-3 is back with a fresh coat of paint and a redesign that bears a notable resemblance to Optimus Prime. The new waterproof bot, shown showering, walking on a floor scattered with sand, and using a screwdriver as a human would, is meant to take on typical jobs at construction sites, such as driving (?) vehicles. Kawada hopes to court contractor clients by 2010 with the attractive introductory price of $120,000 per robot.
