ASUS Eee PC 1005PEG includes WiMAX for those lucky enough to live near a signal

Apparently we weren’t the only one’s enjoying some Clear speeds down in Vegas, the 10.1-inch ASUS Eee PC 1005PEG was riding the 4G waves too. Other than its WiMAX support, the Eee PC 1005PEG has the same specs as the recently-reviewed 1005PE, including a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N450 CPU, 1GB of RAM, and a 250GB hard drive. If the 10005PEG can manage the same 8-hours of video playback as the 1005PE we’ll welcome the WiMAX-enabled lappie with open arms to the growing family of Pine Trail netbooks.

Lenovo RapidDrive brings SSD and HDD together, demoes 66 percent speed boost on video

You know, making that jump from HDD to SSD still costs an arm and a leg, so how about somewhere in between that gap? That’s what Lenovo‘s offering as an option for the IdeaPad Y460 and Y560 coming in March. The idea with this RapidDrive technology is that you can have a 32GB or 64GB PCI-Express SSD installed alongside your regular HDD (up to 500GB option), and the two drives will effectively be combined into one. Sounds like a tribute to the hybrid hard drives that seem to have quietly disappeared. The guys at Lenovo Blogs claim that “this is not Intel TurboMemory” as RapidDrive implements a “more automatic” algorithm to dynamically pool and manage the hybrid drive, thus giving up to 66 percent increase in Windows 7 boot speed as well as everyday performance. Regardless of this jab at Intel, we’ve seen this demoed at CES and it looked as good as the video demo after the break. Just don’t let us down with the SSD prices, Lenovo.

T-Mobile’s Fender edition myTouch 3G now available for $180

We’d already heard that T-Mobile’s new Fender edition myTouch 3G would be rolling out on January 20th, but we hadn’t had much indication about what sort of premium (if any) it would demand over the standard myTouch. Well, as you can see above, you will have to pay an extra $30 on top of the $150 the regular myTouch 3G currently demands (on-contract, naturally), but that will get you a bundled 16GB memory card, not to mention a genuine 3.5mm headphone jack, a few pre-loaded songs from Eric Clapton and others and, of course, that classy woodgrain finish. Not too shabby for an extra thirty bucks, if you ask us.

Palm suddenly means business with games, heading to GDC this year

That was a quick turnaround, wasn’t it? Palm wasted no time in retailing 3D games that are as visually engaging as the best the iPhone has to offer just as soon as it made the big announcement back at CES, and now it’s taking things to the next level by heading out to GDC in San Francisco this March. The Game Developers Conference is — as gaming goes, anyway — what you’d call a Big Deal, so the fact that Palm is leading a session there to educate interested parties in its Plug-in Development Kit is a promising sign that these guys are taking the concept of webOS as an entertainment platform very, very seriously. Of course, it would’ve been nice to see this kind of drive about a year ago — but better late than never.
