Toshiba has been promising the world a healthy dose of fuel cell chargers for what feels like ages now, with its most recent swearing happening just two months ago. Here at CEATEC, the company’s wares were being trumpeted by KDDI. We witnessed a standard handset have its stock battery removed and replaced with an admittedly bulky fuel cell container. The booth attendant proudly juiced up the cell, clipped it onto the phone’s rear and mashed the power button. Within seconds, the device booted up normally, and a handy level indicator on the charger itself kept us in the know on how much life was left. Or — you know — maybe the whole thing was just an elaborate hoax to fool English-speaking media into thinking this stuff was really nearing its commercial release. Have a look at a brief video just beyond the break, but try not to get your hopes up too high. No need in having your heart broken again unnecessarily.

The Palm Pre is scheduled to make its big GSM debut on O2 in Europe in just a few weeks, and it looks like final production units are making their way into the wild — these shots of a German Pre complete with final box art and a localized keyboard just hit the wires. Nothing here you’re not familiar with already, but man — the GSM and the Pre, gettin’ down. We’d only dared to dream, you know? Now all we need is a version with some North American 3G bands and we’ll be all set.

AT&T’s restrictive network policies might have been behind some of the more notable iPhone app rejections in the past, but at least one major class of applications just got the green light, as Ma Bell just opened up iPhone VoIP calls over 3G. We can only assume this is the result of the FCC’s renewed push for net neutrality and AT&T’s argument that it’s doesn’t need new regulations to remain open, but — what does this mean for you? Well, Skype on the road, for starters, but we’re guessing a flood of interesting new VoIP apps will hit just as soon as devs can get their apps updated and submitted. We’ll see how pushing all this more data affects AT&T’s network going forward — we’re totally starting a SlingPlayer petition drive if things don’t totally blow up.

We’d been hearing rumors that the
Motorola Sholes on Verizon wouldn’t be running
MOTOBLUR because it’s to be a
“Google Experience” device, and while that seemed silly at first, it certainly looks like the device Verizon CEO
Lowell McAdam was waving around this morning was running stock Android. How can we tell? For starters, Blur has a different 3G icon in the menu bar, and different icons for several apps — Calendar leaps out to us here. What’s more, that certainly appears to be the default Android search box lurking back there, something that’s not part of the Blur homescreen. That’s definitely odd, considering how big a bet
Motorola seemed to be placing on Blur as its handset differentiator — and doubly odd since the HTC Hero Eric Schmidt was holding at the same photo op
was running Sense on top of Android. We’ll have to see how this one shakes out when the Sholes is actually launched, but for now we’d say those rumors are looking awfully true.

If we were tickled by how quickly
the PSP Go was hacked, we must say that we’re surprised at how long it took for this bad boy to get KIRFed. And as most shanzai manufacturers do, they packed as many features into this portable as they could: 4.3-inch display (compared to the PSP Go’s 3.8-incher), all kinds of retro gaming support (including NES/Famicom, Gameboy / Gameboy Color, SNES, SFC), a camera of some sort, FM radio, microSD card slot (the device’s only form of storage), TV out, and generous video codes: RM, RMVB, AVI, WMV, ASF, MPG, MPEG, MPE, MP4, DAT, and MOV. Not exactly
“aspirational” at $84, but we’ll take it nonetheless.
