DIY’er constructs artsy wall clock from spare HDD parts, tells all

Instructables user grybaz has joined a special crew today with his masterful design, and that would be the oft-unappreciated DIY clock crowd. By utilizing a drill, screwdriver kit, pliers, a basic quartz clock movement and a dozen or so old hard drives, he was able to piece together something truly worthy of den placement. Handymen aren’t apt to find this one any more difficult than fixing that pipe that one time underneath the sink, so if you’re looking to do something useful with all of those 4GB 3.5-inch HDDs you’re still hanging onto from college, roll up your sleeves and hit the read link.

Standard Dell mouse gets GRS electrode implant

Filed under:

Looking to spark up a makeshift psychology lab in the basement of your house? Look no further than the galvanic skin response computer mouse. For those unaware, GRS electrodes can gather data about human interactions with computers, though most rigs are so invasive that test subjects end up freaking out rather than passing on useful information. This non-obtrusive method relies on a device that the vast majority of computer users already use (that’d be a mouse), and by simply installing the sensors into the left and right click buttons, you’re left with an analyzing tool that may not even tip off your kid sister, significant other, or your most favorite poker pal. At any rate, hit the read link to get your mad scientist on.

Mcor launches Matrix 3D printer, only asks for your paper and glue

Filed under:

We wouldn’t go so far as to say that 3D printers are growing tired, but we are growing short on patience waiting for a commercial version that the average joe / jane can afford. Thankfully, Mcor is up to the challenge, recently delivering its Matrix to the UK and gearing up to bring it to other parts of the world in 2009. Put simply, this carving creature uses traditional A4 paper and PVA glue to create objects like the ones you see above. Throw in a nice, sharp blade and a little bit of computational prowess, and you’ve got yourself one wicked 3D printer with running costs “up to 40 times less” than competitors.
