The last time we saw some new Joybooks they were these cute little
10.1-inch things, but the new R46 is their professional-minded older sibling (the Alex P. Keaton to your Mallory, perhaps). This sober, serious machine sports a 14.1-inch “UltraVivid” WXGA display, a Core 2 Duo T3400 processor, integrated x4500 graphics, up to 4GB RAM, up to 320GB storage and all the love that WiFi and Bluetooth provide. And if video conferencing is your bag, you’ll be please to note that it comes with a 2 megapixel webcam and microphone with smart noise suppression. Available now in China, Thailand and Malaysia — but the price remains a mystery.

Sony got a lot of things right with its
5.0 firmware update for the PSP, with the PlayStation Store and its direct downloads making a long awaited appearance, but it looks to have caused a bit of a problem for folks with high-capacity Memory Sticks — namely, it was reporting that 8GB or 16GB cards are full when, in fact, there’s plenty of free space left on ‘em. Ever the one for a do-over, Sony now says that it’s aware of the problem and that the 5.01 firmware update will sort everything out when it’s released “soon.”

LaCie launched the original LaCinema media drive back in January, and the company is now extending the line of media-playback drives with the LaCinema Rugged. Built in a tasteful black version of the same rubber-coated chassis as LaCie’s standard rugged drives, the new unit comes in capacities up to 500GB and features 1080i HDMI output of a variety of codecs, including XviD. The LaCinema remote appears to be redesigned, and the menu system is apparently graphical and pretty, which is always nice. Not a bad way to do playback on the go, we suppose — now if LaCie would just bring the £219 ($357) drive to the States, we’d be all set.

We already detailed the basics of Sony’s VAIO TT — you know, the outfit’s slap in the face to the netbook arena — earlier this month, but the crew over at CNET had a chance to benchmark the unit and toss out some quantifiable talking points. Overall, critics found it just as appealing as we did, but they couldn’t help but point out just how debilitating the insane price tag is. Of note, they weren’t particularly wowed with the sheer performance, but the magnificent battery life (nearly 4-hours in a video playback drain test) and the speedy SSDs were gushed all over. At the end of the day, this thing is still too expensive for the majority of laptop buyers, but those not alarmed by the $2,000+ sticker should hit the read link for a look at the full writeup alongside a few benchmarks.

While any announcement of a new game console is rightly going to be greeting with a hefty amount of skepticism, it looks like this new Evo “Smart Console” from upstart Envizions Computer Entertainment
could be a bit of a unique case and, as
Pandora has shown, sometimes these things do actually pan out. Working in the Evo’s favor is the fact that it’s really nothing more than a Linux-based computer that relies entirely on off the shelf parts like an overclocked Athlon 64×2 5600 processor and ATI Radeon 3200 graphics. The more ambitious, and potentially vaporware bit, is Envizions’ hopes for the system as a game development platform and a cloud computing device of sorts. Apparently, it’s betting on developers tailoring games specifically for the system and selling ‘em through its proposed Evo Network, which Envizions CEO Derrick Samuels says would “give Linux game developers a chance to make some money.” The company also says that a subsidized rebate plan will eventually bring the price of the console down to $250, but it’ll run a full $600 out of the gate, and Envizions will gladly take a $100 deposit right now from anyone willing to reserve one of the first few consoles that’ll supposedly start shipping on November 20th.
