Walmart shutting off DRM servers, turning over a new leaf

Filed under:

Walmart began selling DRM-free tracks in its music store in August of last year. 13 months later, the mega-corp has decided to follow the footsteps of so many others and hit the kill switch on its DRM management servers. As noted in an e-mail to customers, Wally World will be making the final transition into a fully DRM-free MP3 store on October 9th, and in order to keep those DRM-laden files playable on anything, it’s recommended that you burn protected files on a CD on the double. If you choose to ignore this message, you’ll be unable to “transfer your songs to other computers or access your songs after changing or reinstalling your operating system or in the event of a system crash.” Heed the warning, kids.

Sanho introduces HyperDrive COLORSPACE UDMA photo backup drive

It has been some time since we’ve seen a new competitor in the photo backup realm, so it’s with a great sigh of relief that we pass along word of Sanho’s HyperDrive COLORSPACE UDMA photo backup device. The unit is capable of sucking down 2GB of data per minute and claims to be “the only storage device in the market that can decode and display true RAW images from any camera on its 3.2-inch (QVGA) color LCD screen.” Furthermore, it orientates images automatically depending on how it’s held, and the included data synchronization functionality enables the drive to sync information with another external HDD or your main rig. Oh, and it can understand 14 different types of memory card, so you’re probably fine on that front. Check it out next month for between $339 (80GB) and $599 (500GB), depending on capacity.

Welcome to the DNC, featuring Barack Obama and the T-Mobile Bold

This could’ve come straight out of Germany where the BlackBerry Bold is already alive and well on T-Mobile’s airwaves, but let’s pretend for a moment that it didn’t. Instead, let’s assume that there are a select few copies of T-Mobile USA’s Bold floating around in the wild, and one such example just happened to turn up at the Democratic National Convention a few weeks ago. We’re not saying that’s what’s going on here, but… hey, are those beads of sweat forming on your forehead there, AT&T?

[Thanks, Vince C.]

Killing Bugs

Many people assume I went vegetarian and then vegan because I care about animals. That’s a common perception, but as I’ve mentioned before, it isn’t the truth. The truth is essentially the opposite. My compassion for animals developed only after I made these dietary changes.
Going vegetarian in 1993 and then vegan in 1997 both started [...]
