Nintendo financial reports don’t usually provide riveting reading entertainment. However, the Japanese firm’s latest number cruncher has thrown up an all new game, DS Novel.
According to our pals over at CVG, the new game is set to follow in the footsteps of best selling Far East title DS Bungaku Zenshuu, which came chock full of classic Japanese literature.
We reckon a British edition would include a spot of Dickens, some Shakespeare, the Bronte sisters and, er, Jilly Cooper.
If you ask us, the 3-inch screen on the DS is little weeny for that kind of behaviour, but if you don’t fancy buying books and the like, surely it’s a better alternative than spanking your cash on pricey eReaders.
Whether DS Novel is a hit remains to be seen. But considering Ninty is the king of turning bizarre ideas into multi-million pound industries, we wouldn’t be surprised.
Everyone fancies a piece of HD projector action. But unless your Roman Abramovich or one the fellas who’s got their hands on that £32 million snaffled from the Securitas robbery, getting one into your pad is as likely as Accrington Stanley winning the Premier League.
Sony, however, has swooped in with an all new ‘affordable’ picture spitter, the VPL-VW40. Chucking out Full 1920x1080p HD pictures onto screens up to 300-inches wide (that’s basically the side of your house), it includes Sony’s SXRD tech for recreating that cinema vibe, a Bravia Engine and a 15,000: 1 contrast ratio.
Okay, that ratio’s not even close to some of the beamers that we’re used to gawping at, but then this isn’t going to hit you for the best part of £20k.
It also has 24p True Cinema, supported on Blu-Ray decks and the PS3. All you need to do is shove in an HDMI cable into one of the two sockets and away you go.
Sony says the fan’s dead quiet too, at a mere 22db. Meaning you can watch the artier flicks in your collection without sound akin to a plane taking off in your front room ruining your enjoyment.
For now, there’s no official price, but it’s guaranteed to be far cheaper than the VW60. That’s a massive £3,500.

You probably won’t be seeing TVcompass’s SR 1500 universal remote released looking exactly like this (or even bearing the TVcompass name) but we have high hopes some other company will rebrand the WiFi-enabled unit soon. Featuring a QVGA display, and Windows CE, the SR 1500 pulls device codes from the web using the built-in browser, which supports Flash and J2ME, backup settings to a server, and do custom guide displays. There’s no pricing yet, but hopefully that’ll get sorted when this thing gets picked up for resale.

Sad news brewing in Round Rock this morning. After slashing “dozens” of call center employees in Ottawa yesterday (and scrapping plans for 1,200 more), it looks like Dell is taking its cost cutting initiatives retail. Unfortunately, we’re not talking lower prices here. We have word from a number of sources that Dell’s 150+ Dell Direct Stores are about to meet the business end of the corporate axe. Whether that be in full or a partial reduction we don’t know. Nevertheless, with Dell now firmly entrenched in Wal-mart, Staples, and Best Buy, the mall kiosks sure seem redundant. Expect more on this later in the AM after Michael Dell’s had a chance to address the troops.
