Facebook Admits Ad Service Tracks Logged-Off Users
Facebook has confirmed findings of a CA security researcher that the social-networking site’s Beacon ad service is more intrusive and stealthy than previously acknowledged, an admission that contradicts statements made previously by Facebook executives and representatives.
Carnegie Mellon’s “Crusher” military bot getting $14 million upgrade

Carnegie Mellon’s so-called “Crusher” unmanned military vehicle already had quite a bit going for it in its previous incarnation, but it now looks to set to expand its robotized arsenal even further, courtesy of a $14.4 million grant from the Army. According to the university’s National Robotics Engineering Center, the updated bot will make use of the “latest suspension, vehicle frame, and hybrid-electric drive technologies to improve upon its predecessor’s performance” while also promising to, somewhat ominously, “push the envelope for autonomous and semi-autonomous operation.” That the NREC says, should allow the bot to begin working alongside troops in five or ten years, with it initially confined to convoy roles before it puts its autonomous skills to use in “tactical” missions.

Nokia’s “Comes with Music” free subscription service — cancel, keep the music

So here’s the deal. Nokia just launched a “Comes with Music” program. No, not software, but a deal which allows you to buy a Nokia device with a year of unlimited, subscription access to “millions of tracks.” Once the year is complete however, customers can keep all their downloaded music — it doesn’t disappear just because the subscription is over. What’s the catch? Don’t know yet. We know it’s limited to Universal Music Group tracks for the time being but there’s no mention of any fees, DRM, or other restrictions. We’ll update you as soon as we get more.
Update: It’s free for one year! All the Universal Music tracks you can download for 12 months can be yours. The offer doesn’t begin until mid 2008, just as long as the deal doesn’t fall apart by then.

OQO announces Model E2 with HSDPA — and that’s all

Man, what a tease. OQO’s Anytime / Anywhere event is all wrapped up in London and with it, an updated OQO Model E2 with HSDPA data is born. At the moment, that’s all that’s been announced, a same spec’d Model E2 with a €250 (about $367) premium inclusion of HSDPA/UMTS 2100MHz; GSM/EDGE/GPRS 900/1800MHz (SIM Free) data. Really now, was a full-blown press conference required to announce a simple (though useful) HSDPA bump to the European version of the Model 02? Full press release coming tomorrow — maybe we’ll see some surprises then.
