AMD is apparently getting ready to launch its new Phenom processor on November 19th, according to DailyTech. The chipmaker’s media guide for the launch seems to have been leaked early, and it’s got some interesting info in it regarding the Phenom and the next-gen Radeon. We already knew most of the Phenom deets, but it looks like the supporting RD790 chipset is also ready to go, along with three versions of the RV670 Radeon HD 3800 series. The low-end 3850 is actually a revised version of the existing Radeon HD 2900 with a die shrink from 80nm to 55nm, but the top-end Radeon HD 3870 is a new design with a 100MHz clock bump to 775MHz. All the cards feature support for Quad Crossfire and AMD’s Triple Play Physics system, but don’t feature any of the hardware video decoders that had been rumored. Unless something changes, we should be seeing all this stuff on the 19th — which is probably when we’ll know about pricing as well.

Palm’s not the only company that isn’t afraid to speak out on the Open Handset Alliance. Nokia, Microsoft and Symbian made it most clear today that they don’t perceive danger from the new initiative and corresponding Android OS, with Nokia stating it quite bluntly: “We don’t see this as a threat.” Microsoft was a bit more on the defensive. “It really sounds that they are getting a whole bunch of people together to build a phone and that’s something we’ve been doing for five years,” said Scott Horn, from Microsoft’s Windows Mobile marketing team. “I don’t understand the impact that they are going to have.” The Symbian folks stated the obvious: “If Google was not involved the industry would have just yawned and rolled over,” said John Forsyth of Symbian. “We take it seriously but we are the ones with real phones, real phone platforms and a wealth of volume built up over years.” UIQ was a bit more optimistic about the OHA, saying that “Generally, it’s positive for the industry.” Apple wasn’t as commital either way. “We have a great relationship with Google and this doesn’t change anything,” said Apple spokeswoman Natalie Kerris. “They are certainly an important partner for iPhone.”

Apparently, Asus’ Eee PC is so small, even NewEgg‘s atypically quick fulfillment crew couldn’t believe that five of these things could fit into a single cardboard shipping box, so they just decided to slap labels on entire cases and let ‘em rip. Truth be told, there’s no telling how nor why a number of users on the EeeUser.com forums were initially sent five machines for the price of one, but judging by a list of reports and even an accompanying picture, ’tis true. Supposedly, NewEgg caught on to what was happening and began turning shipments around before they were delivered, but rather than getting an apologetic call, credit towards a future purchase and a single overnighted laptop, some customers actually received all five. Granted, we’re hearing that those in the latter camp were kind enough to let honesty prevail, but who knows how many lurkers are quietly slipping their newfound Eee PCs onto eBay as we speak. So, the question beckons: did any of you receive a whole lot of unexpected Eee PCs? Do tell.

We expected just as much, but now it’s in writing: Palm sent us an official response to our gently-worded “assimilate or die” editorial. It goes as follows:
“Palm has always been committed to open platforms for developers. And Palm has the added differentiation of being able to tightly integrate the software platform with our hardware design, which we believe gives us an advantage in delivering a great user experience.
Palm customers have benefited from the availability of Google services on Palm’s platform, such as Google Maps for mobile on Palm OS. And we look forward to further collaboration with Google to offer great user experiences on Palm products.”
While we’re glad they responded, we really hope we don’t have to wait a year and a half for Palm to prove us all wrong here.

We’d heard rumors about the Glofiish X600 last month, and now E-TEN‘s made it official. The red and black WinMo 6 handset isn’t going to blow anyone’s mind, but it’s a solid addition to the Glofiish lineup: 2.8-inch QVGA screen, 2 megapixel cam, quad-band GSM (no 3G, though), GPS, WiFi, and Bluetooth. No word on price, but E-TEN says we’ll be seeing these hit in mid-November — just enough time for us to get settled in with the now-shipping X800.
