enano’s latest mini PCs tout Core 2 Duo, energy efficiency

Filed under:

Joining Epson and a growing host of others in the miniscule PC arena, enano is throwing its own offerings in the hat while boasting about greenness all the while. The generation e2 lineup sports “book sized” enclosures, a sleek black paint job, and four different models to suit your fancy (and budget). All four units rely on one of Intel’s Core 2 Duo processors, but apparently, none are sporting the Santa Rosa love just yet. The machines can be configured with up to 2GB of DDR2 RAM, 160GB of SATA hard drive space, an integrated TV tuner, gigabit Ethernet, 802.11b/g, 7.1 surround sound audio, and feature Intel’s GMA950 integrated graphics set, an SD / MS / MMC card reader, a total of four USB 2.0 ports, one 4-pin FireWire connector, DVI or VGA out via adapter, S-Video out, and audio in / out ports to finish things off. The box itself weighs in at just three pounds and measures 8.8- x 6.8- x 1.65-inches around, and while the company claims that you’ll save a bundle on energy costs with this power sipper, the up front charges ranging from around $1,200 to near $2,000 probably makes up for it.

New York Attorney General files Dell deception lawsuit

Filed under:

New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo has filed a lawsuit against Dell, accusing the company of false advertising, failure to honor rebates and warranties, and several other fraudulent acts (including the specific, legally defined crime of “fraud” in New York). Dell is quite unsurprisingly contesting the suit, saying that “we are confident that our practices will be found to be fair and appropriate,” and that the number of customers named in the Attorney General’s filing “are based upon a small fraction of Dell’s consumer transactions.” Dell spokesman Bob Pearson makes sure to say that “even one dissatisfied customer is too many,” which sorta makes his earlier statement about the number of affected customers being small meaningless: especially since if the claimants are successful, this’ll make at least two dissatisfied Dell customers. As one of America’s largest corporations, Dell has been the subject of many lawsuits, although not all are filed by Attorneys General. That said, Pearson has made certain that this recent suit is not related to the Security and Exchange Commission’s ongoing investigations into Dell’s accounting practices. Well, that’s a relief then.

Save another $100 on HD DVD this FATHER’S DAY

HD DVD A2

It seems that every week we hear about a price drop from either HD DVD or Blu-ray, and this week it’s both. First Panasonic announced their DMP-BD10A for $600 and now Toshiba is announcing a $100 in-store instant rebate — our favorite kind — on any HD DVD player purchased between May 20th and June 16th. Assuming no other discounts, you can now get a stand-alone HD DVD player for that magic price of $299. This combined with the free movies promotion, removes any (price-related) excuses for not picking up an HD DVD player, and enjoying the Ultimate Matrix Collection on HD DVD.

Full-size Gundam created for GUNDAM CRISIS attraction

While those of you who have the luxury of frequenting the Fuji-Q Highland Amusement Park in Fujiyoshida, Yamanashi, Japan, we’re sure a tear was shed when Gundam the Ride: A Baoa Qu was closed down just months ago. Thankfully, the successor is bigger, better, and almost ready to rock, as the GUNDAM CRISIS thrill ride prepares to envelope you in a Gundam hanger and elicit quite a few smiles. The actual Gundam will indeed be a 1:1 full scale rendition, meaning that it’ll stretch to about 18-meters in height, and while we certainly wish you could strap it onto a rail and call it a roller coaster, this attraction looks to be one of those tamer “walk through types.” Of course, that also means that there is no height or age requirement to see the ominous beast, and considering that it should shuffle its first guests through in July, you won’t have to wait much longer to get your Gundam fix at Fuji-Q.

Microsoft announces Next-Gen PC Design Competition winners

Filed under:

Taking a break from all the actual products being announced at this week’s WinHEC conference, Microsoft has used the opportunity to announce the winners of its Next-Gen PC Design Competition, none of which you’ll likely be able to get your hands on anytime soon. Taking home the $25,000 Chairman’s Award was the MADE in China PC designed by John Leung of AARIVE Design (seen above), which was “specifically designed to bring computing closer to the world’s 1.3 billion Chinese.” Apparently, the surface of the device is actually a touchscreen, with the so-called “CHOPstylus” used for input. Among the Judge’s Awards, the “blok” PC intended for use in kindergarten classrooms snagged first-place, incorporating building-blocks, keyboard mats, and digital markers into its design. Other winners include the BulbPC, designed to fit inside a standard grommet hole on a desk, and the Zeed+ for the Future PC, which is based on “Ikebana,” the Japanese art of formal flower arrangement (upgrades are apparently done simply by replacing the “flowers”). Lastly, the People’s Choice Award went to Zhu Fei’s “Light up your Life” design, which consists of a “glowing cylindrical orb” that can act as a flashlight, portable multimedia player, or mobile phone. Check out the gallery below for a closer look at all the winners.
